Innovative Solutions for Disaster Management

DisasterLAN, the product of the collaboration between Buffalo Computer Graphics and University Emergency Medical Services, is a complete hardware and software solution that brings with it a number of tools for disaster coordinators. Traveling in a road case and trailer, DisasterLAN can be brought directly to the site of an EOC. Coordinators are given laptops that communicate wirelessly with the DisasterLAN server and allow them to access all of the resources brought to the EOC with the system.

A key component to this system is a chat client that allows for uninterrupted communication between coordinators. Once personnel are logged into the system through the chat client or web site, they are able to access any resources that are open to their administration determined security level. These resources include a complete Call Center for managing incoming requests and offers of assistance, an event Status Board, Streaming Video from the disaster site, live Weather Data, compiled listings of chemical information, listings of important contacts for the disaster, Email, Urgent, Message Broadcasting, and a number of Administration tools that allow for Coordinators to get a handle on the situation as it changes.

The DisasterLAN Immunization Module is designed to address the problems a mass vaccination effort will encounter. The Immunization Module implements a real time tracking system for every patient and every dose of medication that goes through the clinic. Initial tracking starts at registration and is updated as the patient goes through each step of the vaccination process. Upon completing the vaccination process, the system records the type of drug that was administered, the location the immunization was inject, the dosage given, and the lot number for the particular medication. All of this information is stored electronically to be used and analyzed later.
